Step 4: Taking the kneaded eraser, I lightly and carefully, tap some of the tones off the highlights on the bridge of the nose, the ball of the nose, and below the nostrils. Step 3: I began using a small soft brush for the edges and for the darker areas. This is the base tone and it helps make additional layers of graphite tone smoother. I applied the graphite powder in very light layers, adding more as needed. This brush produces a smoother effect than the soft brush I used in the eye tutorial. Step 2: I’ve used a Chinese brush to apply the initial 2 or 3 layers of graphite powder. The highlights have also been lightly indicated. Step 1: Here is the outline on 8.2 x 10.1 cm (3.25″ x 4″) Canson paper. Many thanks to Toni-Marie Hudson for the use of her picture as reference for this tutorial. I hope you will find the following images and descriptions informative and helpful as a guide in drawing noses. Step 6: I did the skin beside the nose by means of HB, B and 2B mechanical pencils. The shading below the nose was done using B and 2B mechanical pencils. Step 5: The nostrils were rendered using the 2B mechanical. In this stage, I blend only occasionally. Step 4: Now I really established the dark tones and shadows on the wings, sides, ball, and tip of the nose using 2B, B and HB mechanical pencils and H wooden pencil. Step 3: Just to establish where the darks would go, especially the sides of the nose, I used the HB mechanical pencil and then I blended again with the towel. Then, with a soft brush dipped in a bit of graphite powder, I covered it with two to three layers of the medium. This is to prevent the paper from being too rough when further layers of graphite are applied. Step 2: Applied 4H wooden pencil for the initial layer. Step 1: The outline was drawn on a piece of bond paper then transferred to an 11.5 × 12 cm (4.5″ × 4.75″) Canson paper by means of the graphite transfer method. 0.5 mm B (Staedtler), 2B (Dong-A) and HB (Faber-Castell) mechanical pencils.Although I merely applied a 4H wooden pencil for the first initial layer, I decided to give it a try. As before, my drawing technique varies to give me a chance to experiment on different methods. Now that we have finished the male eye, here’s another portrait drawing tutorial: the male nose.
